Adults, Let’s Talk Online Safety – The Viral Threats You Actually Need to Worry About

By Nancy Rich

We hear a lot about keeping kids safe online, but adults are getting hit just as hard, sometimes harder. The scams and risks out there aren't just spammy emails anymore. They're personal, they're convincing, and they're going viral.

Here's what's actually happening right now, and what you can do about it.

AI is the New Weapon of Choice

Let's be real, AI has changed the game. It's not just about fake news anymore. The big one right now? AI identity theft. Over half of social media users are worried about AI using their photos or voice to create fake versions of them, and honestly, that fear is justified .

Think about it. Scammers can take a few seconds of your voice from a social media video and clone it. Then they call your grandma, sounding exactly like you, saying you're in trouble and need money. It's happening .

A recent survey found that nearly 9 in 10 people can't tell what's real from AI-generated content anymore . That's terrifying. And almost half of adults have already run into an AI-driven scam .

Romance Scams Are Still Huge—And Getting More Sophisticated

The FBI just put out a warning about this. Romance scammers are still out there, targeting people on dating apps and social media, especially women over 40 . They build fake relationships, gain trust, and then hit you with a sob story and a request for money.

Here's the kicker, some of these scammers keep detailed journals about their victims. They study you. It's not random; it's a full-time job for them .

Scam warning

Deepfakes and Fake Images Are Everywhere

We're seeing more fake images and videos online than ever before. And it's not just celebrities. Regular people are having their photos stolen and manipulated . There are even "nudifying" apps that can create explicit images of someone without their consent. Some places are trying to make these illegal, but they're still way too easy to find .

What You Can Actually Do About It

1. Don't Trust Your Ears (or Eyes)
If you get a call from a "family member" asking for money, hang up and call them back on a number you know is real. Don't trust emotional pleas over the phone .

2. Lock Down Your Social Media
Check your privacy settings. Make your profiles private. And think twice before posting that cute video of yourself, it gives scammers raw material for voice clones .

3. Pause Before You Click
Links are still one of the easiest ways to get hacked. If a link looks even a little suspicious or was sent by someone you don't know, just don't click it .

4. Be Skeptical of Online Relationships
If you've never met someone in person and they start talking about money, financial trouble, or a "can't miss investment opportunity," it's a scam. Period.

5. Talk About It
This isn't something to be embarrassed about. Scammers are professionals. The more we talk about these risks with friends and family, the harder it is for them to succeed.

The online world is changing fast, and the threats are getting more personal. Staying safe means staying skeptical, and maybe trusting your gut a little more than your eyes and ears.

A Major Online Safety Bill Just Passed the House. What It Means—and Ways to Keep Kids Safe Online

By Nancy Rich

Last month, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Kids Internet and Digital Safety (KIDS) Act in a bipartisan vote. The bill combines several children's online safety proposals and represents the most significant federal action on this issue in years.

However, it's important to note that the bill has not yet become law. It now moves to the Senate, where lawmakers are debating key provisions, particularly around whether to include a "duty of care" standard that would hold tech companies liable for certain harms. The final version remains uncertain, and advocates on both sides continue to weigh in on what the legislation should look like.

(KIDS) Act

Whatever happens with the bill, child online safety remains a priority for families, educators, and communities. Below are general, publicly available tips that experts and organizations commonly recommend for keeping children safer online.

General Tips for Child Online Safety

The following information is based on widely available guidance from reputable sources and is for informational purposes only.

1. Have Open Conversations

Talk with children about their online experiences regularly. Ask what they're seeing, who they're interacting with, and how they're feeling. Keeping communication open and judgment-free makes it more likely they'll come to you if something concerns them.

2. Review Privacy Settings Together

Check the privacy and location settings on apps, devices, gaming consoles, and school-issued technology. Adjust settings to the most restrictive options that still allow for appropriate use. Turn off location sharing unless it's necessary.

3. Discuss AI and Chatbots

Many children and teens are using AI-powered tools and chatbots. It's helpful to remind them that these are not human, not private, and not always accurate. Encourage critical thinking about the information these tools provide.

4. Monitor Gaming and Social Platforms

Children can encounter risks on gaming consoles and social media, including cyberbullying, inappropriate content, and contact from strangers. Review age ratings, use available parental controls, and stay aware of the platforms your children are using.

5. Address Online Gambling and Sextortion

Some children are exposed to online gambling or targeted by individuals who manipulate them for personal gain. Direct, age-appropriate conversations about these risks can help children recognize warning signs and know when to seek help.

6. Set Boundaries as a Family

Establish shared agreements around screen time, device-free zones, and digital curfews. When children help create the rules, they are often more willing to follow them.

7. Use Reporting Tools

Most platforms have tools for reporting inappropriate content, harassment, or predatory behavior. If a child is in immediate danger, contact local law enforcement.

Beyond the Playscreen: Why “Slow Parenting” Is Making a Surprising Comeback in a Fast-Paced World

 By: Nancy Rich

Feeling overwhelmed by flashy, high-tech toys? Discover why the latest trend in childcare isn’t an app, but a return to simplicity, sensory play, and “slow parenting” that boosts development and reduces family stress.

Picture this:
Your living room is glowing like a mini Times Square, plastic toys chirping, blinking, and bursting into song. Meanwhile, your child?
They’re deeply invested in… the cardboard box.

If you’re nodding, welcome to one of the quietest (and most refreshing) revolutions happening in parenting right now.

Across homes, playrooms, and childcare centers, families are ditching overstimulation and rediscovering a truth we forgot somewhere between app updates: kids thrive on simple, slow, sensory-rich play.

And the benefits, for your child’s brain, behavior, and your own nervous system, are bigger than you might expect.

What Is “Slow Parenting,” Exactly?

Think of slow parenting as the farm-to-table approach to raising kids.

It’s not about stepping back.
It’s about stepping in with intention.

It’s the decision to trade jam-packed schedules, flashy toys, and constant stimulation for:

  • presence over perfection,

  • connection over correction,

  • and simple, open-ended play over highly structured programming.

The goal?
Calmer kids. More creative brains. Happier families.
(And yes, fewer meltdowns, too.)

The 3 Slow-Parenting Trends Dominating 2025

1. Sensory Bins Are Replacing Screens

Forget the latest educational app. The real MVP in early childhood right now is a plastic bin filled with… rice. Or beans. Or sand.

It sounds almost too simple, until you see the magic happen.

Why Parents Love It:
Sensory bins give kids the chance to pour, scoop, dig, sort, measure, and explore.
That means:

  • longer attention spans

  • better fine motor skills

  • early STEM thinking

  • and deep, peaceful focus

It’s hands-on learning without a battery in sight.

Try This Today:
Grab a bin, add dried beans, toss in a few spoons and cups, and watch your child disappear into 45 minutes of quiet exploration.
(You’re welcome.)

2. Open-Ended Toys Are Replacing Toys That “Perform”

We’re moving away from toys that flash and sing, and toward toys that ask kids to think, imagine, and create.

The new favorites?

  • wooden blocks

  • Magna-Tiles

  • play silks

  • animal figurines

  • stacking cups

Why They Matter:
When a toy “performs,” the child doesn’t have to.
When a toy is open-ended, the child becomes the creator, engineer, storyteller, architect, problem-solver.

A single set of blocks can become a castle, a zoo, a rocket ship, a restaurant, or a city grid.
That kind of imaginative reuse builds:

  • creativity

  • narrative skills

  • persistence

  • and divergent thinking, the skill that fuels innovation

These are the tools kids will need for a world we haven’t even invented yet.

3. Connection Rituals Are the New Behavior Strategy

Forget time-outs. Today’s parents are embracing the power of time-ins, a shift rooted in neuroscience and co-regulation.

Instead of isolating a overwhelmed child, connection rituals involve getting close, staying calm, and helping them ride the emotional wave safely.

What It Looks Like:

  • Sitting beside your child during a meltdown

  • Naming the feeling they’re struggling with

  • Offering a hug, a soft voice, or a quiet moment together

  • Reconnecting before redirecting

The Result:
Kids who feel seen behave better, not because they fear consequences, but because they feel secure. Emotional intelligence grows, and power struggles shrink.

The Bottom Line: In a World That Moves Fast, Childhood Doesn’t Have To

Slow parenting isn’t a trend you buy.
It’s a mindset you adopt.

It’s choosing a box over a blinking toy.
A sensory bin over another episode.
Connection over chaos.

And it’s giving yourself permission to believe that simple is enough.

Because the truth is:
The most powerful tools for your child’s development are already in your home, and in your presence.

What’s one slow, simple activity you want to try this week?
Share it in the comments, your idea might be exactly what another parent needs.

Learning Software for Your Family’s Growing Mind

Remember when "educational software" meant a single CD-ROM? Today, the best learning tools are dynamic, online services that grow with your child. This new world of Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) for education offers incredible advantages for busy families.

Unlike a one-time purchase, these platforms live in the cloud. This means they are constantly updated with new lessons, and security features, no downloads required. They adapt to your child's unique pace, offering challenges where they excel and support where they need it.

A powerful example is Khan Academy. This free platform provides a personalized learning library for all ages, from phonics to calculus. Its adaptive exercises and engaging video lessons turn screen time into growth time. For parents, it offers gentle progress insights, so you can celebrate your child's achievements together.

Forget the rigid software of the past. Modern platforms like these are flexible, engaging partners in your child’s education, designed to fit seamlessly into your family’s modern, connected life.

Sweat, Smiles, and Family Ties: Fun Ways to Get Fit Together

Picture this: Your living room transforms into a dance floor, your sidewalk becomes a race track, and your backyard turns into an obstacle course. Staying active as a family doesn’t mean slogging through boring workouts, it’s about creating moments that spark laughter and connection. Swap screen time for sunshine with brisk walks, (check with your doc first if you’re new to exercise!), bike rides, or a frisbee showdown at the park. Even a 10-minute living room dance-off counts!

Why? Regular movement boosts energy, sharpens focus, and builds healthy habits kids want to keep. Plus, shared sweat sessions strengthen bonds. “Remember when Mom tripped over the dog mid-Zumba?” becomes a story for years.

Pro tip: Keep it playful, not perfect. Mix activities, hike one day, swim the next. Celebrate small wins with high-fives or post-adventure smoothies. And hey, if the kids revolt? Bribe them with a post-walk ice cream date. (Balance, right?)

Your family’s health journey isn’t about rigid routines, it’s about joy. So lace up, step out, and let the fun (and maybe a little friendly competition) begin. Who’s scoring the first touchdown this weekend?

Always consult a healthcare provider before starting new fitness routines, especially if you have pre-existing conditions. Safety first, then confetti cannons.
